In Young’s recent work, celebrities, pop stars, and other iconic figures are juxtaposed alongside California license plates. Formally, the drawings are placed next to each other through exacto fine cut-outs; parti...ally readable letters butt up against acutely drawn renderings of Kanye West, Charlton Heston and the late pop king Michael Jackson. The insertion of the portraits into groupings of seemingly arbitrary letter and number systems that half suggest a word or acronym tie deliberate but unstable relationships between them. A dead-eyed gazing Micheal Jackson stares at us from a cut out geometric shape sitting among plates reading “4PRV013” and “3NOH023”. In a similar way that poetry rests on the variable of language construction by placing word choices together, the work’s agency rests in the effectual insertion of the portraits into a setting of letters and numbers that may or may not form a relationship.

Anthology Closing Reception/Artists' Talk
Please join us at XYandZ Gallery on Thursday, February 17th at 7pm for a panel discussion with participating artists, moderated by Robyne Robinson. Robinson is a trailblazer in local music and arts coverage--you may remember her 8-year running FOX 9 segment, The Buzz, which aired in the 1990s through the early 2000s. She was the first local TV news journalist to bring consistent, mainstream attention to the dynamic Twin Cities art and music scenes. Robinson will question the photographers about their work, their connection to the local music community, and will prompt them to share some of the stories behind images exhibited in Anthology.
An audience q&a and open mic will follow, inviting attendees to read or tell their favorite personal stories from the Twin Cities music scene. Have an epic backstage memory? A long lost tale of rock n' roll mayhem? Perhaps a personal anecdote inspired by the sounds of local musicians? Bring a memory to share!
